Beaus lines are horizontal or transverse depressions in the nail they can be seen in the fingernails thumbs toenails or all nails that may be confused with nail ridging. Beaus lines should also be distinguished from muehrckes lines of the fingernails. These vertical lines are usually a natural consequence of aging and are harmless. They usually develop when nail plate growth which begins in the nail matrix located under the cuticle is temporarily disrupted.
