They were first bred to hunt 200 years ago in. The original purpose of the breed was to hunt gamebirds. The gordon setter is a sporting breed named after the duke of gordon of the gordon castle located close to fochabers in moray scotland.
The gordon setter was recognized by the akc in 1884.
