The city was defended by an egyptian garrison under british general charles gordon. After being refused british support gordon was killed and the city was lost to the mahdists. Unfortunately no doubt can now exist that general gordon was among those massacred when khartoum fell into the hands of the rebels.

Known as chinese gordon or gordon pasha he is best remembered for his heroic and sacrificial role in the siege of khartoum sudan during the mahdist rebellion which lasted a year and ended with his death.
